Best of Casper: Vol. 1
» Nostalgie de la boue
The early Casper cartoons are comparable in animation quality to the other Famous Studio cartoons of the time. The animation is good without ever having the flourishes and humor at Warner Bros or the high polish of Disney.
The stories are very limited. Casper wants to find a friend. Everybody is scared at the sight of a ghost and runs away. Eventually via subterfuge or the other’s innocence he finds a friend. At least for a time. The incidents are more “heartwarming” than witty. While the quality of the transfers is high production credits are chopped off of each cartoon. There is a mass credit of sorts at the end of the disc. I find the removal of credits unacceptable in animation releases nowadays.
Mysteriously two ‘toons are listed as bonuses. But they play without any need to resort to the features menu. I’d say there are two main audiences for these: people who want to see animation of the time and people looking for absolutely “wholesome” cartoons. The humor is probably too thin for many.
For me the first dozen are enough.
